Logo Woes

April 29th, 2003 · 1 Comment · Miscellaneous

There’s an article in today’s Star-Bulletin covering the chorus of criticism hurled against the new UH logo project, highlighting the online petition.
And of all the messages posted to it, they had to go and quote mine.
As if my contentious tenure as Ka Leo editor wasn’t enough. (I mean, you call this in-depth reporting?) [...]

Double Whammy

Turns out the decision by George W. Bush’s 2004 re-election campaign to relocate and reschedule the G.O.P. convention to coincide with the next Sept. 11 anniversary in New York is problematic for more than one reason.
That is, you know, in addition to being ghoulishly exploitive.
While they work it out, I’d also recommend against that victory [...]

Journalist, Celebrities, and the First Amendment

I’m a regular listener to NPR, but really didn’t know much about anchor Bob Edwards beyond his nice delivery and occasional quips. But this editorial, adapted from a lecture he gave at the University of Kentucky, struck me as remarkable (if not a little meandering).
Media conglomeration, suppression of dissent, the failure of the media [...]

Ryze and Shine

Online networking comes in many shapes and sizes. Longtime tech dude Burt Lum — yes, he of the suspiciously familiar homepage designs — has pointed me at Ryze Business Networking.
A simple, organic design, useful cross-links for subject areas, contacts (including a personal profile), and the like, with growing networks for Hawaii, bloggers, and online media.
You’ve got [...]

The in-laws are coming! The in-laws are coming!
Actually, a whole bunch of in-laws are coming. Both Jen’s parents from Florida, her aunt from Boston, and her sister-in law and her niece and nephew from Virginia are all arriving tonight. And with Jen’s brother Mike already stationed here, it’s not only one of the largest [...]

I’m Melting!

Egads am I sick. Sicker today than I was over the weekend, when I thought I was getting better. Every joint aches. My head is throbbing. My nose is either too plugged up for me to think straight, or running so fast not even Jackie Joyner Kersee could grab a Kleenex™ [...]

Silver Lining

The number of people dependent on news coverage aired by our local Hawaii Public Radio stations — from NPR to the CBC to the BBC — cledarly sees explosive growth during wartime.
HPR started its “Spring Fund Drive,” but unlike the usual rolling start to pledge calls, General Manager Michael Titterton was just beside himself this morning when [...]

Lucky Bastard

April 1st, 2003 · No Comments · Miscellaneous

It was nine years ago to the day that I asked Jen if she wouldn’t mind, terribly, perhaps maybe being my girlfriend. I’m still not sure why she said yes. (Maybe she thought it was an April Fool’s prank.) But I’m glad she did.
I love you, kitten.
