Healthier Cooking for Kids in Kahala

It’s astonishing what kids will eat, and how much of it. But as a dad to three keiki, I can tell you that I’m not always proud of the things they put in their mouths. If you’re like me, you might want to check out “The Kids Food Adventure,” a national children’s food tour that’s coming to Hawaii this week.

Chef Jehangir Mehta will be at Whole Foods Market at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 10 to lead a cooking class designed to teach kids to be more adventurous with food, and make healthier choices at the same time.

Mehta is perhaps best known as the runner-up in last year’s “The Next Iron Chef” competition on the Food Network (trumped only by Jose Garces).

He is the chef-owner of Graffiti in New York, where he works magic in a cramped 40-square-foot kitchen. It’s there where he started “Candy Camp,” a children’s cooking class. He also authored a holistic cookbook, “Mantra: The Rules of Indulgence.”

Wow, useful information for Hawaii parents. So he doesn’t own a restaurant or anything here in HI, right?

I loved Jehangir when he was on The Next Iron Chef, definitely somebody very committed to mastering the culinary art. I’d love for this type of thing to come to Maui (now that we have a WholeFoods, let’s make it happen!!!).
