Developers Invited to Saturday ‘Code Retreat’

Developers of every stripe are invited to join in on a global celebration of software craftsmanship on Saturday, with Honolulu’s fifth annual Global Day of Coderetreat. Last year, local coders were among more than 2,000 developers in 150 cities around the world that spent the day practicing and sharing their craft.

And while the Honolulu event has been spearheaded by Aloha.rb organizer Christopher Sass (who by day works with real estate software firm Real Geeks) for the last three years, it’s not limited to Ruby developers.

“The event is ‘language agnostic,'” he tells me, noting that the event is open to “intermediate to advanced developers of any language looking to improve their level of software development, design and craft.”

And among Global Day of Coderetreat organizers, Sass has a unique connection to the first ever event in 2011: he participated in the full-day program twice.

“I attended the first global day back in 2011 — one of the creators of Coderetreat facilitated a Coderetreat in Sydney, then I hopped on a red-eye and did it again here,” he recalls. “It felt like something I wouldn’t want to miss, and I was right.”

(Sass was following Coderetreat co-founder Corey Hanes, who made the same dateline-crossing trip the following year.)

The Global Day of Coderetreat is an “intensive practice event,” encouraging developers to shift gears away from the grind of “getting things done” and focusing on the fundamentals of software development and design.

“The Coderetreat format has proven itself to be a highly effective means of skill improvement,” notes the event invitation. “Practicing the basic principles of modular and object-oriented design, developers can improve their ability to write code that minimizes the cost of change over time.”

Honolulu’s Global Day of Coderetreat 2015 will kick off at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14 at the Manoa Innovation Center’s “Ideation Room” (Suite 160).
