Bookmarks for October 6th

When I’m not blogging, I’m browsing. Here are sites and pages that I bookmarked on October 6th:

  • Canoe research revives ‘Maori from Hawaii’ theory: Researchers studying the evolution of culture say analysis of Polynesian canoe design suggests New Zealand was at least partially settled from Hawaii. The concept of Hawaii as the ancestral home of Maori fell out of fashion among archaeological circles more than 60 years ago.
  • Killer asteroid hunter suffers from poor vision: The first of the asteroid-hunting Pan-STARRS telescopes will be taken apart today in an effort to solve problems with image quality. Sited atop a volcano on the Hawaiian island of Maui, PS1 is the prototype for telescopes that will image the whole sky visible from Hawaii three times each month.
  • Scientists spark Aerospace in Hawaii Week: Researchers from the School of Ocean and Earth Sciences and Technology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa will participate in lively panel discussions this week as part of Aerospace Week in Hawaii.
  • LCROSS Viewer’s Guide: The Pacific Ocean and western parts of North America are favored with darkness and a good view of the Moon at the time of impact. Hawaii is the best place to be, with Pacific coast states of the USA a close second.
  • Moon-crashing probe aimed at bigger target: A NASA spacecraft destined to crash into a moon crater in the hunt for hidden caches of water ice has a new target, the space agency announced Monday.
  • Groups sue state over Mauna Kea management plan: A consortium of groups opposed to the state’s management plan for Mauna Kea said it filed suit in 3rd Circuit Court yesterday, fighting for its right to protest a plan it says doesn’t protect the environment or Native Hawaiian cultural resources.
