• Rogue Brown Dwarf Lurks in Our Cosmic Neighborhood: Brown dwarf-hunting astronomers have reported the discovery of a “failed star” located within 10 light-years from Earth. This makes it the nearest brown dwarf and one of ten nearest stellar objects to our solar system.
• HECO will study ways to boost PV power: Hawaiian Electric Co. and its Neighbor Island utilities have won a $3 million federal research grant to study how they can manage more photovoltaic power on their electric grids.
• With biofuels, burning of cane may go up in smoke: A multimillion-dollar research project to investigate converting Hawaii’s last sugar plantation to biofuel crops could mean the end of an era of another kind: cane burning.
• Department of Education and Discovery Education Commence New Partnership: The Hawaii State Department of Education and Discovery Education recently commenced a partnership providing K-8 educators and students in 222 public schools statewide access to Discovery Education streaming Plus and Discovery Education Science.
• Coalition alleges fish farms hurt land: A new coalition of local environmental groups released a report yesterday that was critical of the relatively young ocean aquaculture industry in Hawaii.
• Hawaiian submarine canyons are hotspots of biodiversity and biomass [PDF]: Underwater canyons have long been considered important habitats for marine life, but until recently, only canyons on continental margins had been intensively studied. Researchers from Hawaii Pacific University (HPU) and the Universtiy of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) have now conducted the first extensive study of canyons in the oceanic Hawaiian Archipelago.
• 2010 MATE International ROV Competition [PDF]: The MATE Center and the Marine Technology Society’s ROV Committee are organizing the 9th annual MATE International ROV Competition. The event is being hosted by the University of Hawaii at Hilo, which is located on Hawaii’s Big Island.
