  • Physics program gains prestigious national ranking: The latest National Research Council ranking of graduate programs has placed the UH Manoa physics department among the top 12 in the United States.
  • The Energy Lab Achieves LEED Platinum Certification: The Energy Lab at Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy is the first building in Hawaii to achieve Platinum-level LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for Schools 2.0 certification.
  • PUC Approves Feed-In Tariffs for Renewable Energy [PDF]: The Hawaii Public Utilities Commission today issued an order approving feed-in tariffs (FIT) for renewable energy generators to facilitate the acquisition and development of renewable energy in Hawaii.
  • Recently Discovered Habitable World May Not Exist: Two weeks ago, astronomers announced the discovery of a Goldilocks planet circling another star. But yesterday other astronomers announced that they could find no trace of the prized planet in their observations.

  • UH Manoa Receives $12.6M Grant: UH Manoa’s John A. Burns School of Medicine has received major new funding for community-based research designed to improve the health of Hawaii’s people.
  • Meetings on Kahului Airport’s future to be held: The main terminal at Kahului Airport was designed more than 20 years ago with 48 landing slots. Planes got bigger, and the effective number that can be used has been halved to 24.
  • Cancer Research Center of Hawai’i to begin construction on facility: The $120-million project will usher in a new era for cancer care in the state and will meet the Center’s need for expanded research space to accommodate the top-tier scientists that it is recruiting to Hawaii.
  • Water Ice Common on Asteroids, Discovery Suggests: Two research teams have found evidence of water ice and organic molecules on the asteroid 65 Cybele, just six months after discovering the same stuff on a different space rock.
  • Molokai Hoe to stream live online: Thanks to technology and a ton of homework the crew at Ocean Paddler TV is more than prepared to pull this off. The six-hour, five camera live webcast of the 41-mile race from Molokai to Oahu is huge step forward for the official state team sport.
