Honolulu Startup Weekend Planned

Launching a startup company can be exhilarating, but also a daunting challenge of planning, organizing, and building. Can it be done here in Honolulu… in one weekend? Kailua software developer Dave Pascua hopes to find out. He announced Startup Weekend Honolulu yesterday, tentatively scheduled to take place at Fresh Cafe from January 28-30, 2011.

Startup Weekend is actually an international phenomenon, hosted in over 100 cities in over 25 countries:

Startup Weekend recruits a highly motivated group of developers, business managers, startup enthusiasts, marketing gurus, graphic artists and more to a 54 hour event that builds communities, companies and projects. It is an amazing opportunity to connect with other passionate and skilled individuals, and perhaps even find a co-founder or two to transform your idea into reality.

Pascua says he envisions a group that will build a web or mobile application which could form the basis of a credible business over the course of a weekend. At this early date, he’s looking for people who might want to get involved in organizing, promoting, and sponsoring the event.

This may or may not be the first official Startup Weekend in the Aloha State.

Two years ago, local entrepreneurs staged a similar 48-hour event in a Waikiki apartment, although it was not formally affiliated with the Startup Weekend organization. Earlier this year, there was apparently a Startup Weekend Hawaii scheduled on the island of Kauai in April, organized by Dayna Marcum. I’m not sure if it actually happened, but the latest update does hint that Oahu was up next.

Whether you’re an entrepreneur or investor, programmer or designer, or simply someone who craves a taste of the startup rush, mark your calendars now for January.

Hey there! Thanks for the mention! Kaua’i is going to be a destination event and we’ll schedule it based on the success of Honolulu! So, the event is officially March 18-20, at Fresh Cafe. I won’t be able to make the trip — no flying for mommies-to-be! I know it’s going to be awesome! Great blog, you keep me posted — thanks so much!
