Boom
Anyone catch the Discovery Channel “Mythbusters” episode that explored
explosive decompression in an airliner? If you did, you probably noticed that they used an old Hawaiian Airlines jet, retired and otherwise rotting away in a plane graveyard in the Mojave Desert.
It was something else watching Adam Savage (who a dead ringer for Dick Walker) and Jamie Hyneman climbing all over that familiar tropical paint scheme, shooting bullets in it, blowing windows out of it, and ultimately blasting a gaping hole in it (those are my crappy screenshots) with explosives.
And, yes, they did mention the real-life example of “explosive decompression”: Aloha Airlines Flight 243, immortalized in a made-for-TV movie.
Geez, I wish I had cable! I love shows like that. Actually, anything involving commercial aircraft is fascinating to me. I would have loved to have seen this.
If only I could blow up airplanes for a living. It’s not quite the same merely documenting it.
