DR Fortress data center outage impacts thousands

An unplanned outage sparked by a system upgrade gone bad at the DR Fortress data center affected dozens of Hawaii businesses, including Hawaiian Airlines, which in turn led to the delay and cancellation of dozens of flights.

The 65,000+ square-foot DRFortress facility is has 800 server racks available for colocation. Established in 2006, the company houses the densest concentration of IP carriers and networks in Hawaii, and is home to the Hawaii Internet Exchange.

As Hawaii learned, however, the efficient centralization of services has a downside. Annalisa Burgos of Hawaii News Now reports.
