Rally to Support Act 221

Extend 221 T-ShirtA cross section of Hawaii’s tech sector — ranging from entrepreneurs and venture capitalists to business leaders and everyday geeks — will present a united front at tomorrow’s opening day at the Hawaii State Legislature. Spearheaded by Bill Spencer of the Hawaii Venture Capital Association, the group will amass at the Father Damien statue at the State Capitol at 7 a.m., put on “Extend 221” T-shirts, grab “Extend 221” signs, and make a strong impression on Hawaii lawmakers.

Act 221 provides substantive tax credits for people who invest in high technology in Hawaii. Opponents say it costs too much in lost tax revenues and has too many loopholes, but supporters say it’s still vital to diversifying Hawaii’s economy beyond tourism and creating high-skill, high-paying jobs in the islands.

If you’re interested in being a part of the Act 221 squad (and getting your own free “Extend 221” T-shirt) need only show up at 7 a.m. After a brief rally, the group will queue up to get into the legislative chambers for the opening ceremonies. Finally, the group will join the public in visiting the various House and Senate offices, delivering their pro-technology message… and partaking in some great food.
