Bon Dance in Makiki This Weekend

The Jodo Mission of Hawaii (located in Makiki off S. King St. at 1429 Makiki St.) is holding its annual bon dance on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 14 and 15. Dancing begins at 7:30 p.m., but the food concession opens at 5:30 p.m.

Though dancing is the main attraction, the food at bon dances is always a draw. At the Jodo Mission this weekend, you’ll be able to enjoy BBQ sticks, saimin, sushi, spam musubi, andagi, hot dogs, chili and rice, grilled corn, and of course, shave ice.

Are you a bon dance beginner? No problem. Jodo Mission of Hawaii is also holding bon dance practice for beginners tonight at 7 p.m.

I’ve always loved obon season, but I’m particularly looking forward to this weekend’s bon dance because I volunteer on the board for Jodo Mission of Hawaii. I invite you to connect with the temple on Facebook and Twitter.  Indeed, I’m hoping to see a few Twitter friends there on Saturday.
