The Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act of 2007, a.k.a. the Akaka Bill, was passed by the U.S. House this morning, 261-153. Numerologists take note, it was the 1,000th vote taken by the 110th Congress. “Today’s House action provides great momentum in our effort to extend federal recognition to Hawaii’s indigenous peoples,” said the bill’s author, [...]

Betty Shimabukuro, food writer for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, has reached out to Mainland readers to educate them on Hawaii’s favorite foods. And they’re not coconut and pineapple. In a special to the Los Angeles Times titled, “10 Hawaiian culinary specialties to sample” (guess the headline writer missed the AP Stylebook update on ‘Hawaiian’), she urges [...]

“It’s dat time of year again!” Yes, as Lynn “Auntie Pupule” Vasquez reminds us, the holiday season is fast approaching, and with it comes the third annual Mayor Wright Housing Christmas Slippah Wish Fund. Even though it’s not uncommon to go barefoot in Hawaii, kids in public housing shouldn’t have to. So “Auntie Pupule” and [...]

October 20th, 2007 · No Comments · Hawaii, Politics
A few days ago, I mentioned the disappointing news that one of Hawaii’s up-and-coming young lawmakers, Rep. Jon Riki Karamatsu, had been busted for DUI. I also noted that Karamatsu, as one of our few elected leaders with a blog, had a unique opportunity to address his constituents and the public directly, without the filter [...]

Lee Jun Ki Snubs Hawaii Fans
October 17th, 2007 · 12 Comments · Hawaii, Pop Culture
I’d never heard of Lee Jun Ki until today, but I gather some of his fans now wish they could say the same thing. Hawaii is a hotbed of J-Pop and K-Pop fandom, a fact that has no doubt fueled some of the success of the Hawaii International Film Festival. For this year’s Spring Festival, [...]
